IssuesEconomic DevelopmentI am very concerned about two of our top ten sales tax producers, the BMW and Porsche car dealerships, leaving town. If we do not replace that revenue, the blow to our general fund would be considerable. We need to prioritize economic development. Without doing so, we risk the economic health of our city and services such as fire, police, and infrastructure repair could be hurt as a result. I look forward to reading the report of the Economic Development Committee. Their report as well as your insights will be important in formulating a plan of attack so we can sustain and even improve Hermosa's economy. In reading the report, I will try to ascertain the efficacy of building a second parking structure, new hotels, office space, or focus on infrastructure, etc. This will be my top priority during my term in office. Valley School GymNothing is more emotional to me than building a gym for Valley School. It is simply not right for us to shortchange children and I am glad that the Facilities Committee has contracted a leading architect firm to begin designs for a new gym as well as classroom space. I applaud the School Board for their vision and leadership to put Bond Measure J before the voters and look forward to campaigning for its passage. Did you know that during inclement weather, Valley students do not have physical education and have to spend the time in the multi-purpose room? Did you also know that if a student at Valley has first period physical education, they go the rest of the day without a shower? Heart of the CityRedondo's draft EIR does not address traffic impacts. Clearly, 24,000 more car trips daily and 3000 more residences along the Hermosa border will have an impact on our city. First, we need to make sure Redondo's plan addresses these concerns in their EIR. Then, we need to look at the most trafficked areas: Monterey, Hermosa and PCH where they intersect Herondo. We may have to be creative in dealing with parking and traffic. Stricter residential parking areas and enforcement, traffic-flow patterns using one-way streets, etc. are some ideas. Also, we can put into action ways to use this to our advantage. I believe our businesses, for example, will compete favorably with Redondo's. We may be able to increase lunch time traffic to our businesses by utilizing a lunch shuttle service similar to El Segundo's. This could have a positive effect on creating tax revenue for the city. |
