CommitteesAs part of the reorganization of city council committee delegate and alternate appointments, I volunteered to represent you on the following committees: City-School District PartnershipThe Partnership was formed in order to foster better cooperation between the School Board and the City Council. A major goal of mine will be to advocate the building of a gym at Valley School. Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project (SMBRP)The SMBRP is a coalition of environmentalists, government, scientists, business and the public that was formed in 1988 to develop a Santa Monica Bay Restoration Plan. One of the first among 27 National Estuary Programs nationwide, the SMBRP is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the State of California, and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation. Its mission has been to create a comprehensive plan to ensure the long-term health of Santa Monica Bay, the 266-square mile body of water located adjacent to the heavily urbanized, second most populous region in the United States. Approved by Governor Pete Wilson in December 1994, and by US EPA Administrator Carol Browner in March 1995, implementation of the Bay Restoration Plan is now underway. As a member of Heal the Bay, there are few issues more important to me than protecting our ocean resources. I look forward to representing the South Bay cities on this Commission to make sure the South Bay is safe and clean for its residents. League of California CitiesThe League of California Cities is an association of California city officials who work together to enhance their knowledge and skills, exchange information, and combine resources so that they may influence policy decisions that affect cities. Founded in 1898 on the principles of local control and interagency cooperation, the League includes the voluntary membership of all of California’s 476 cities. I will seek to ensure that Hermosa gets it fair share from Sacramento while holding harmless important state education and environmental initiatives. South Bay Youth ProjectThe South Bay Youth Project has served families in Hermosa Beach and the South Bay since 1975. Originally formed to prevent young people from entering the juvenile justice system, this non-profit program is dedicated to assisting youth experiencing difficulties at home, school, or in the community. The Project’s seventy licensed therapists counsel a diverse range of problems, including: family or school problems, acting-out behaviors, substance abuse, physical or sexual abuse, parental neglect, or inadequate supervision, etc. Referrals are received from schools, law enforcement agencies, parents and youth. A parent must call the Project to arrange for counseling. The Project will conduct an assessment to determine the needs of the student and his/her family and make a referral to one of the therapists. The services that may be included are: individual, family or group counseling; crisis intervention; substance abuse evaluation; education and treatment; parent education; assessment for inpatient treatment and shelter care. I will fight to ensure that families and children in need will continue to have access to programs that enable them to be in a position to succeed. Independent Cities Association (ICA)The ICA’s charge is primarily focused on reaffirming the authority of local governments. Many times in the past, the state and federal governments have passed laws which erode local control and burden cities with unfunded mandates. I strongly support ICA’s goal of greater local control as it is my core belief that the government closest to the people will be more responsive to the people. Beach Cities CommitteeThis committee was formed to foster cooperation between the beach cities. |
